Co-designing a decision aid for shared decision making

Movement difficulties in Parkinson's disease can change between consultations. Patients and clinicians often spend part of a short visit reconstructing daily-life symptoms from recollections or diaries. This can leave less time to discuss treatment options in relation to the patient's goals and preferences.

Within the JustHealth doctoral network, our work aims to co-design a decision aid that brings understandable daily-life information into that discussion, including third-person camera assessment of freezing of gait at home. Patients, clinicians and researchers work together, with input from engineering, ethics and legislation, to make the aid understandable, responsibly used and integrated into clinical workflows. This interdisciplinary team aims to enable the transition from reconstructing symptoms towards informed shared decision making.
